Hindustan Motors (HM) is planning to launch the Mitsubishi Outlander at a sub-Rs 20 lakh price in a bid to steal market share from its main rival, the Honda CR-V. Unlike the CR-V, which is completely imported (and hence attracts a 120 percent tax penalty), the Outlander will be locally assembled by HM in its Thiruvallur plant where the Lancer and Cedia are also assembled. Locally-assembled cars pay far less tax than imported cars and this is the key reason why HM can price the Outlander competitively. The Outlander is similar in size and specs to the CR-V, and has a 2.4-litre four-pot petrol motor with Mitsubishi’s version of variable valve timing. Called MIVEC or Mitsubishi Innovative Valve Timing Electronic Control, the system features three different modes for low, medium and high engine speeds.

Although it produces 170bhp, this motor is expected to be slightly detuned to account for the quality of our fuel. Transmission options include a six-speed manual and a stepless CVT with six pre-selected ratios which can be controlled via paddles on the steering wheel, which is expected to be more efficient than a conventional automatic. The Outlander has Mitsubishi’s All Wheel Control system, which, when engaged, transfers torque between the front and rear axles for maximum traction. For conventional road use, it functions as a front-wheel-drive. The driver also has the option of 4WD lock for negotiating extreme conditions, but there isn’t a low-range option available. The Outlander has a very advanced suspension package which includes monotube dampers and coil springs at all four corners. Monotube dampers have a faster response time compared to conventional tube-in-tube dampers, and this eliminates wheel hop. The benefits are felt in both ride and handling departments. According to sources in HM, the Outlander will come in essentially one trim level which will be fully loaded to include a high-end entertainment system, replete with four six-inch speakers, twin dome tweeters, a 10-inch sub-woofer and a 650 watt amplifier as standard.

The Outlander comes with a 7-seat configuration but this option will not be offered in India as it requires a space-saver spare tyre to be used under the floor behind the third row of seats. Regulations do not allow the use of a space saver and hence a full-size spare has to be used which eats into the third-row seat area. Mitsubishi also focused a lot of development time on safety. Intelligent airbags that deploy according to the severity of impact are one such feature. The Outlander also boasts class-leading pedestrian impact ratings. HM plans to begin trial production of the Outlander by mid-2008 and launch it soon after.

Fiat 500 Abarth

Watch out Mini, the Fiat 500 – CAR’s car of the year 2007 – is getting the high-performance treatment. The Abarth version unveiled today is pitched as a new interpretation of the Sixties road racer, but can they make a bigger, heavier hatch as exciting as that?

The 500 Abarth 2008-style uses the Fiat group’s 16-valve 1.4-litre Fire engine breathing with the assistance of an IHI variable-geometry turbocharger to deliver a warm 135bhp at 5500rpm. So this car won’t challenge the upper echelons of hot-hatchdom that now have to pump out closer to 200bhp to be in contention. That honour will befall more tuned Abarth SS versions that are under development.

Detroit Auto Show: Volkswagen Passat CC

Volkswagen unveiled the Passat CC. Some of its features are “imported” from the standard sedan. Volkswagen came up with a more attractive design and the new front fascia and the smaller rear overhang. The interior also has been modified, now it’s more ergonomic and it features new panel instruments. You can choose between various engines, 1.8 TSI, 2.0 TSI, 3.6 FSI and 2.0 TDI. Another interesting feature is the Park Assist. We think the new version is better than the previous, and we hope that you will enjoy it.

The Third Generation of Suzuki Kizashi

Suzuki wants to prove that it can be a serious contender for any automaker as they prepare to unveil the Kizashi 3 Concept next year at the New York Auto Show. The previous Kizashi Concepts were very popular last year at Frankfurt and Tokyo Auto Shows.

The Concepts were based either on four-cylinder turbodiesel or V6 petrol engines, but rumors say that the new model will be a super cool completely new V8 engine and the Kizashi will sport an AWD powertrain.

It’s a good thing that the competition is intensifying and every automaker is trying to establish itself in all classes.

2009 Mercedes SL 63 AMG

A couple of weeks ago Mercedes-Benz unveiled the 2009 SL 63 AMG which is destined to be the perfect substitute for the SL 55 AMG. Mercedes wanted a change in the engine sector and they kissed goodbye the 510 HP supercharged as they welcomed the new 6.2-liter V8 which produces 538 HP and 465 lb-ft torque. The new AMG model features a new front fascia, new side-gills and larger air intakes, but these are just some of the additions. We should specify that the engine was entirely manufactured by AMG and for it, Mercedes prepared an innovative seven-speed transmission called MCT( Multi-Clutch Transmission) which is a combination of a regular and F1 gearboxes.

Mercedes used us with very good optional packages and they didn’t let us down - customers can opt for 19-inch twin spoke wheels, ABC-actve high-performance suspension, vented ceramic front-brake discs and AIRSCARF. The last is an innovative extra heating system which sends warm air through vents with the purpose to extend the open-air driving season

TATA - ISRO HYDROGEN CAR

Auto major Tata Motors is joining hands with space agency ISRO to bring out environment-friendly, hydrogen-driven automobiles.

The two will be using the newly-tested cryogenic engine technology, said a report quoting ISRO chairman G Madhavan Nair. According to the ISRO chief, an immediate application of the space agency’s cryogenic technology is in automobiles.

In fact, ISRO is working with the Tatas to see how best a proto model can be put on road by 2008. Taking the first step, the two entities have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for joint development of the clean auto technology in 2006. According to the report, ISRO expects that a pilot vehicle will be tried out in 2008.

Giving technical details, the report added that the technology to handle liquid hydrogen is a byproduct of the spin-off of the indigenous cryogenic upper stage project, which ISRO demonstrated earlier in November 2007. The space agency believes that Tatas can make good use of hydrogen at making cars. Calling it the fuel for the next generation, ISRO says that if hydrogen proves effective India will have a transport system that runs on hydrogen and even cars to an extent can switch over.

It has been reported that there is a possibility is that a hydrogen bus would be tried out first and then a car. Forty kg of hydrogen loaded on a bus could run up to 300 km, the report added.

The Tata hydrogen vehicle has been in the making for quite some time now. When the product rolls out of its assembly line, the company would see itself among global giants such as BMW, Daimler, Volkswagen, Ford and General Motors, Honda, Toyota, Mazda, Nissan and Hyundai. Another major is the India Reva electric car makers, the Mainis, the report added

2.2 mhawk engine for Mahindra Scorpio Vlx

After all these days of wait and speculation, Mahindra finally launched a new Scorpio variant Vlx with the new 2.2-liter engine. Rumoured earlier to be named eagle, its now branded as mHawk.

more pics after the jump

This new 16-valve engine displaces 2179cc and churns out 120 bhp @ 4000 rpm and 290 Nm torque through 1800 - 2800 rpm. It is equipped with a Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT) to reduce the lag and ensure better delivery of power & torque right from the initial revs. As per Mahindra’s claim Scorpio mHawk can do 0-60 km/h in 5.7 seconds and can reach a top speed of 150 km/h.

The only visual changes that distinguish the Vlx are a translucent decal job and a really lame set of alloys. I personally prefer the hub caps over these. Vlx is priced at 9.57 lakhs (ex-showroom Bangalore) which is 1 lakh more than the top end 2.6 Slx’s 8.45 lakh price. But, Mahindra is making up for this steep increase in cost on the feature front.

Features are good …and mHawk’s got loads of them. The bigger upgrades on the whole feature list are Cruise control & ABS and others include Tyre-tronics, parking sensors, rain sensing wipers and light sensitive headlamps. But do all these upgrades justify the 1+ lakh increase in cost? even if they do, IMO Vlx is a bit on the expensive side. Disappointingly, airbags are not even optional and nothing has been done to correct its short-comings on the handling front.

What is surprising is this Scorpio 2.2 mHawk and the Safari 2.2 Dicor engines -their differences apart- have the same block level specs and both have been developed by the same company AVL.

2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8

For anyone who came of age during the heyday of the unfettered big-cubic-inch American V-8, the feeling is deliciously familiar.
Stab the throttle, and there’s that rocket sled pressure across the shoulder blades as a 6.1-liter Hemi V-8 transmits its massive thrust to the pavement, provoking smoke and shrieking from the rear tires as they scrabble for grip.

The sounds and sensations after pushing the keyless-start button ignite memories of those thrilling days of yesteryear when an original Hemi V-8 lit up its Goodyear Polyglas rear tires and sent an original Challenger hurtling down the highway—or maybe Woodward Avenue—with a heady rush.

Whooma! Is that the ground trembling? Now, as then, the experience is seismic. Whooma! There’s almost nothing in the internal combustion inventory that can match the visceral experience that goes with exploiting the punch of a big ol’American V-8.

And now, as then, a big V-8 can produce some pretty impressive acceleration numbers.

The Hemi Challenger we tested almost 40 years ago was able to smoke its way through the quarter-mile in 14.1 seconds at 103 mph on tires that were considered hot stuff back then but would be only slightly better than linoleum compared with the performance rubber available today.

The latter-day Challenger, with its Goodyear F1 Supercar tires (245/45-20 front, 255/45-20 rear) is expected to rumble to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, with a quarter-mile time of 13.3 seconds. To follow the action, the car gets a performance display similar to the one in the Caliber SRT4 that measures 0-to-60, quarter-mile and g-force.

We must add here that we have yet to put a new Challenger through its paces at a test track, and don’t expect to do so until April.

2009 Rolls-Royce

This year marks the ten-year anniversary of Rolls-Royce falling under non-British ownership, and BMW stewardship has served the company well, both where reliability is concerned—soiling your Savile Row suit as you dive under the hood to fix an oil leak or track down an electrical short is a blessedly rare occurrence—and in the proliferation of new models.

Applying the large-scale manufacturing practice of platform-sharing, BMW has been able to flesh out what is—for Rolls—a large and varied lineup. Indeed, the newest Roller isn’t really even all that new: slap some hand-welded sheetmetal in place of the Phantom Drophead CoupĂ©’s canvas top, and you’ve got the Phantom CoupĂ©, which makes its worldwide debut at the 2008 Geneva auto show. Yes, the suicide doors carry over intact.

In an automotive world where too many vehicles have strayed from their respective brand’s design heritage, Rolls-Royce has stayed true to its traditions. Indeed, the new CoupĂ© is tastefully elegant—the seven-foot long hood, characteristic waterfall grille, and short front and long rear overhangs are all distinctly Rolls-Royce—yet contemporary.

In designing the four-seat CoupĂ©, Ian Cameron, Rolls-Royce’s chief designer, said the team wanted to emphasize the “dynamism” of the vehicle. This car, he believes, caters to an entirely different driver than the similarly styled Drophead convertible. We guess that’s true; obscenely rich guys who want a mind-blowingly expensive two-door car with a fixed roof will be interested in the Phantom CoupĂ©. Obscenely rich guys who want a mind-blowingly expensive two-door car with a roof that goes down will be interested in the Phantom Drophead CoupĂ©.

Ford Fiesta

You’re looking at Ford’s new Fiesta. The new supermini shares around half its parts with the Mazda 2 – which means the newcomer is the same size as today’s Fiesta but slightly lighter. Its diet will pay dividends in sensible things like emissions and fuel economy, but should also make it fun to drive.

After months of speculation, we can finally see how closely the Fiesta has followed the Verve concept car, shown at numerous international motor shows. As expected there’s a little less show-off frippery and glitzy jewellery, but the end result is a distinctive mini that’s light years ahead of the current Fiesta design dullard.

Ford Fiesta: the bodystyles
Today Ford has released photos of the three-door supermini only, but there will be a five-door too. These will be the bedrock of the European range, but there are plenty of other models to look forward to. The Fiesta will be the first B-segment small car to go on sale in the US, in the guise of the Verve saloon. And we’ll also the B-Max mini-MPV in 2009, followed by a Kangoo-rivalling van in 2010.

Each will be wrapped in the smallest application yet of Ford’s ‘kinetic design’. It’s styling boss Martin Smith’s mantra for the latest Ford look – think of it as a mini Mondeo with dominant double grille, angular lights, a rising beltline and exaggerated wheelarches. Oh, and the name for the toothpaste green of the model pictured is ‘squeeze’, apparently.

PORSCHE CAYMAN S

Having just driven the Boxster S a few months back, I was head over heels (or vice versa) in love with the superb dynamics of the poor man’s Porsche, revelling in the superb craftsmanship of virtually everything associated with the vehicle. The thought and detailing that went into each aspect of the vehicle was apparent as was the DNA of the car which is present in every Porsche - everything meant to appease the enthusiast, everything meant to excite him and a few things that he could only find in a Porsche.
The shape of the car for instance - unmistakably Porsche, unmistakably exhilarating. With the Boxster having been labelled as it was, and the huge gap between the pricing of the roadster and the true blue sports coupe, the rear engined 911, there existed the place for another car to be positioned, something that the Cayman S owes its existence to.

The Cayman S takes its place in a classic Porsche line-up without a hint of difficulty as even at the very first sight it can be seen boasting classic design features reminiscent of the Porsche 550 Coupé introduced way back in 1953 and the Porsche 904 Carrera GTS Coupé. While the two large oval headlights and three symmetrically arranged large cooling air intake scoops create the typical Porsche face, uniqueness is added by the fog lamps with their positioning lights integrated via horizontal bars in the outer air intake scoops. Even though the Cayman S is based on the Boxster platform, its looks are far removed even though the front end of the car is just as characteristic as the side-line with air intake scoops in the front of the rear axle, the strong curvature of the roof and the rear end slowly tapering down to the bumper at the back - all classic Porsche design elements.

The overall effect is that of any even more muscular car than the Boxster could pretend to be. The chunkiness also comes a bit from its size and dimensions. Positioned between the two sports car offerings the Cayman S is longer than the Boxster but shorter than the 911, slightly higher than the Boxster but has the same width.

Toyota iQ and Urban Cruiser

Toyota hasn’t bottled it, thank goodness. This first photograph of the iQ shows that the production version of this fascinating mini has kept all the cheeky charm of last year’s show car, which won CAR’s concept car of the year gong.

The iQ at 2007’s Frankfurt Motor Show wowed us for its fresh design, its simplicity and its back-to-basics overhaul of how a small car could be engineered. We reckoned it was the smartest tiny tot since the original Smart Fortwo. Only one picture has been released ahead of the iQ’s production debut at the Geneva Motor Show on 4 March 2008, but it proves that the Japanese have retained the essence of that impressive concept car.

Toyota iQ: here this year
Production of the new iQ kicks off at the end of 2008, and the real thing is as tiny as the concept. It measures less than three metres in length, and has even kept the radical 3+1 seating system, thanks to a cleverly sculpted dashboard and repackaged airbags that let the front passenger seat sit further forward. Although the Fiat Trepiuno (the precursor to the 500) had a similar system, it will be the first production car to have it.

You can buy an iQ from spring 2009, but it’s price won’t be as small as its Smart-challenging footprint. We hear it’ll cost from £8500 – placing it firmly above the Yaris. Less is sometimes more, but we reckon it’ll be worth it for one of the most interesting cars of 2009.

Volkswagen developing small car for India

Volkswagen India Pvt Ltd is set to launch their new small car by 2009-10. It is under development and will be manufactured at the new facility in Chakan, Pune said Mr Joerg Mueller, managing director of the Volkswagen Group Sales India Private Ltd, and President, Volkswagen India Private Ltd.

small car for India

The small car is on the lines of the Polo but having a larger platform and is primarily been developed to cater to India. There does exist the possibility of it becoming an export hub for right hand drive markets globally but currently focus lies with tapping the domestic market as and when the model is introduced, he added.

Prior to the launch of the small car, the company is evaluating to launch the Volkswagen Jetta model (mid-size sedan) though no fixed plans are made as yet said senior company officials.

These announcements were made on the sidelines of the company’s first model launch, the Volkswagen Passat in the country. The luxury car model available in two versions is equipped with 2.0 litre TDI diesel engine; it is now available in the price band of Rs 22.35 lakh – Rs 24.35 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The model will be available through its chain of dealers in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. The company intends to set up more than 10 dealerships by the end of this year said a statement .

A petrol model is in the pipeline though no final plans are made as yet said Mr Andreaz Prinz, head of sales, after sales and marketing for Volkswagen in India.

According to senior officials, the company has identified the Toyota Camry as its main competitor. Its sister company’s Skoda Superb lies in the same price band.

The Passat is assembled at Skoda Auto India’s Aurangabad facility. It will continue to be assembled at Skoda’s facility till the new facility at Pune is not in operation. Though the new facility is primarily being set up for the small car, it will eventually house all Volkswagen models under one roof, said senior officials.

Tata's little car makes big impact

The Nano won't make a formal appearance until October but its presence is already being felt in India's second-hand car lots
It was only unveiled last month and won't hit India's road until October, but Tata's diminutive Nano, the world's cheapest car, has already sent prices on the country's second-hand lots sharply into reverse.

With small cars accounting for more than 75 per cent of second-hand sales in India, prices of used basic models have plummeted by as much as a third in a matter of weeks, according to dealers.

"The Nano is having a very large impact on sentiment," Arif Fazulbhoy, director of Fazulbhoy Motors, one of Bombay's largest dealerships, said. "Tata did a great job in marketing it, people know they will be able to book one soon, and now buyers are happy to sit on the fence."

Designed to replace the cheap two-wheelers that swarm India's streets, the 33bhp two-cylinder Nano is priced at 100,000 rupees (£1,250), excluding taxes. The base model will cost about 130,000 rupees on the road - a sum that would buy a stereo system for a BMW.

According to Mr Fazulbhoy, the price of a second-hand Maruti 800, a model first launched in 1984 and a stalwart among India's very cheapest cars, has fallen by about 30 per cent since the Nano's launch at the Delhi Auto Expo on January 10. A five-year-old 800 now goes for about 75,000 rupees, compared with about 110,000 rupees in December.

Behind the woes of India's Arthur Daleys stands the unprecedented media coverage garnered by the "people's car".

Tata said last week that the website it built to promote the Nano, which has been lauded in the Indian press as the country's first entirely home-grown automobile, received 10 million visitors last month, a figure the manufacturer claimed as a record. Observers say this "Nano effect" will prove crucial in India, a market where a consumer can easily dwell on a potential car purchase for a year.

"People are asking themselves – and us – why they should pay, say, 250,000 rupees for a new Maruti Alto, when they can wait and get a brand new Nano for less in a few months' time, a car that is actually bigger," Darius Lam, of the Indian edition of Autocar Professional, said.

Manufacturers are also being hit directly, with year-on-year sales of new Maruti 800s down 20 per cent in January – a month in which the start of a new registration year usually gives sales a boost.

Analysts expect more downward pressure as more manufacturers join the race to build budget runabouts for the emerging middle classes of Asia's developing economies – a trend that will worry environmentalists who have already attacked the Nano's potential to boost CO2 emissions.

The Renault-Nissan alliance is working on a potential £1,599 car in partnership with Bajaj Auto, the Indian motorbike giant. Volkswagen, perhaps the original "people's car producer, and Toyota, the world's largest carmaker, have also expressed interest in developing ultra low-cost models.

Separately, Tata said that it was happy with the progress it was making in talks to buy Land Rover and Jaguar from Ford, a deal likely to be worth about $2 billion (£1 billion). The increasingly acquisitive group vehemently denied reports that it had discussed sharing technology from Land Rover and Jaguar with Fiat, with which it already has a joint venture to make cars and engines in India and an alliance for trucks in Latin America and Europe.

The issue of how much technology support Ford will commit to Tata is thought to be one of the major potential hurdles in the ongoing negotiations.

General Motors mulls ultra-cheap car with motorbike parts

General Motors may produce an ultra- cheap car using inexpensive motorcycle parts to meet demand in emerging markets, a senior European executive was quoted as saying Saturday. Carmakers have been shaken by the challenge from the Tata Nano, a bargain car recently unveiled in India.

Hans Demant, chief executive of GM's German unit Opel, told the German weekly Auto Motor und Sport that Opel was studying an 8,000- euro (11,600-dollar) rear-engined car that might be built in cooperation with a motor-cycle or motor-scooter manufacturer.

"We are trying something new in the city-car field. The conventional development approach won't work. So we are looking at the capabilities of advanced motor-cycle-style drive trains in connection with a rear engine," he told the magazine.

"Thereafter the question would be, who could we cooperate with? Maybe with a scooter or motor-bike maker. Or perhaps with an Asian supplier to such two-wheeler manufacturers," he said.

Demant said the ideas were just at the discussion and review stage, with no decision likely till next year.

The magazine released the interview in advance of going on sale next week.

2008 Volkswagen GTI: One Of Car And Driver’s 10 Best Cars For 2008

The all-new VW GTI has been included in Car and Driver magazine’s 10 best cars in its 26th annual contest. It was announced a few days ago by Volkswagen of America Inc. For the fifth straight occasion, the GTI has notched this merit that includes a back-to-back 10Best selection for the 2007 and 2008 models.

According to the Auto Channel, the 2008 GTI offers a brand exciting driving experience. It is outfitted with its state-of-the-art 200 horsepower 2.0T four- cylinder engine that creates 207 ft.-lbs. of torque, completely independent sports-tuned suspension, forceful exterior styling, and a convenient interior that evenly blends functionality, elegance and a driver-first design and focus.

In addition to this, the 2008 Volkswagen GTI is a firm and hostile sports car with an offered automated manual DSG(TM) transmission that makes use of direct shifting, which by design depresses clutch-shift points more proficiently and faster than even a professional driver can.

2008 Audi A4

Designed for A4 sedan and Avant models equipped with the 2.0 TFSI engine, exterior differentiation for the Special Edition includes a new standard 17-inch wheel that features a 9 Y-spoke design pattern. Standard interior features for quattro-equipped models include leather-trimmed heated front seats and metallic paint. As a result, models equipped with FrontTrak attain a $405 improved value in new standard equipment, while those with quattro permanent all-wheel drive attain a $1,155 value improvement.

All A4 Special Edition models include a one-year subscription to SIRIUS Satellite Radio, complete with commercial-free music plus sports, news, talk, entertainment, traffic, weather and data. Similarly, customers can still choose the full S line and Titanium packages as optional sport upgrades, as well as a full range of individual options. Some of these sophistications include DVD-based Audi Navigation system, Bluetooth hands-free preparation, iPod adaptor, and wood beltline trim.

The A4 is also one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles in its luxury segment. The cutting-edge 2.0 TFSI direct injection engine made the prestigious Ward’s 10 Best Engines list for the third consecutive year in 2008, which recognized Audi’s expertise with efficient performance and advanced technology.

Safety has also been a top priority for the current model, and the A4 was the first passenger vehicle in its luxury segment to offer brake disc wiping as standard equipment in early 2005. This feature, combined with one of the most advanced and proactive stability control systems ESP 8.0., reduces the chances of inhibited braking performance during wet or inclement weather.

Audi's Indian Focus

With a firm foothold in the Chinese market - Audi dominates other brands as the German marquee of choice there - the company has turned to India as its next Asian target market. India is an obvious target for more than few key reasons.

First, the automotive market there is remains in a very early stage of development. The vehicle per capita ratio is well below the Asian average on the whole. Because of India's enormous population there is a tremendous business opportunity.

Second, newer markets can be expected to provide higher than average growth rates and development accelerates. The Indian economy is forecasted to expand and with it will come growth in automobile sales.

Third, there is a noticeable absence of Indian automobile manufacturers catering specifically to the luxury vehicle segment. The Indian "super rich" therefore choose from global brands such as DaimlerChrysler, Porsche, Ferrari and of course Audi. According to published figures the luxury car market in China has tripled in size in the last five years and currently enjoys a 25% annual growth rate.

Last July Audi announced amid much fanfare and media attention that it would begin selling the TT and A8 in India. More recently Audi has setup three dealers in India, in Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai. Now in addition to the TT and A8 the A6 is also being offered. According to the World Markets Research Centre "Audi appeals to Indian tastes as a European luxury brand with a hint of sports-like flair, a definite bonus for the SUV-skewed customer base."

Late last year Audi AG Managing Director (Asia-Pacific) Fintan Knight commented on rumors that Audi would, in a joint effort with sister company Skoda, begin manufacturing Audis in India. Skoda already has manufacturing in India, so there would be potential synergies and cost savings by leveraging the facilities. He stated that a detailed study would ensue to determine the feasibility of such a move. It appears that Audi would not build separate manufacturing facilities, as Ralph Weyler, Member of the AUDI AG Board for Sales and Marketing, said publicly in January that no production facilities were planned for India at this time.

Whatever the eventual outcome of Audi's efforts in India, there has already been some recognition of the brand. On January 17th at the CNBC-TV 18 Autocar Awards held at the Grand Hyatt, Mumbai, the A8 was chosen "Best Import Car of the Year". These auto awards have proven over the last three years to be India's most credible recognition of automotive excellence.

Mercedes SLK350

After 185,000 sales of the second-generation SLK (and 310,000 of the first), Mercedes-Benz has given its little sportster a raft of enhancements, improvements and other things ending in ‘ments’ .

It has even fatter styling, even more performance and more gadgets than you can throw a Bluetooth enabled headset at. There are over 650 revised or new components, a new-look front and rear styling treatment, a tweaked interior and telematics, a new direct-steering system and more power for the SLK 350 and 200 models.

The front-end treatment is certainly, erm, controversial. The nose positively screams ‘WE HAVE AN F1 TEAM, DONCHA KNOW!’ and for some that’ll be just a little too shouty.

Other more successful styling revisions include the LED ‘tuning fork’ mirrors, the darkened rear lamps and the trapezoidal tailpipe. There’s also a neat piece of surfacing above the front number plate that gives the revised SLK a nice darty profile. So all-in-all a strange juxtaposition of some sweet detailing and some rather clumsy (and impotent – the rear diffuser offers no aerodynamic benefit) styling features.

Volvo make boring cars very safe but now make very safe cars highly exciting

The premium SUV market is burgeoning. First came the Mercedes M-class, BMW X5, Range Rover and Mitsubishi Pajero that set hearts aflutter and dealer cash registers ringing. The Porsche Cayenne and Toyota Prado followed soon after to whet appetites further. VW and Audi jumped on to the SUV bandwagon and unleashed the Touareg and Q7. Now Volvo is ready to launch the XC90 in India.

Volvo has always been perceived as a manufacturer of safe and reliable cars. So it isn’t surprising that Volvo actually managed to keep the SUV bashing green brigade at bay when they launched the XC90 in 2002, their first attempt at a ute after the TP21 of the 1950s. Since then it has surpassed its intended target of 50,000 units a year, selling 90,000 units in 2005. To put it into perspective, BMW sold 1.01 lakh units of the X5 in 2005 while Audi aims to sell 40,000 units of the Q7 in its first full year. Not only have toddlers in the third row approved of the SUV in markets like the US, which incidentally accounts for 50 per cent of all XC90s sold, even the swish set have taken a liking for this Swedish ‘jumped up’ mommy wagon.

Designed under the tutelage of Peter Horbury, the then vice president of design for PAG, the XC90 appears subtly aggressive without the steroid pumping overtones seen in other SUVs. It isn’t conventionally pretty, what with that egg crate grille and runny egg headlamps. But that’s where Volvo stopped with their poultry excursion and created lines that are unconventionally beautiful. Right from the V-shaped hood that snakes itself to the A-pillar, the broad shoulders, the uncharacteristically shaped tail lamps that blend itself with the D-pillar and those wheel arches that hark back to SUVs from the 50s, the design is a study in retro-futuristic marriage. Sure it won’t cause your hair to stand when it passes by, unlike a Range Rover or an X5, but its quirkiness might cause you to give it a second look.

Hyundai plans below-Santro car

CHENNAI: Call it the Nano effect, but the lure for cheap compact cars is growing by the day. Hyundai Motors is working on a new compact car that would be priced lower than the ‘Santro’ and could be rolled out within three years.

The South Korean auto major, that inaugurated its second manufacturing plant here, said the new car would be smaller than the Santro and sport a lower price point and will be developed keeping in mind the global market.
However, company’s India president Ashok Jha said the project was in an initial stage at the moment and refused to comment on specific queries on the new offering, saying it was "too early".

Currently the cheapest version of the Santro is available at an ex-showroom price of Rs 2.7 lakh and with an eye on a low-priced car, Hyundai may possibly look at a price point close to Rs 2 lakh. Jha said the company’s upcoming research and development centre at Hyderabad, that would focus on developing low-cost technologies, would be a contributor to the project.

However, when asked specifically on the Nano and whether it could pose a threat to the company’s sales, he said this could be ascertained only when the Tata’s budget car is launched in the market.

Hyundai’s current capacity in India is about 3 lakh units and the new plant will add a similar capacity, taking up the total capacity to 6 lakh units.

The company is pumping in an additional Rs 4000 crore-plus in India by 2013 over and above the Rs 3372 crore it has invested so far. Hyundai India senior V-P Arvind Saxena said compact cars would be a major focus for the company in the coming years. "It is the largestsegment in the Indian market with a share of 74% and we will focus on it aggressively," he said.

Small cars have been the biggest volume churner for Hyundai in India through its Santro and now with the i-10. However, it has not been able to make much of an impact in sedan segment where only ‘Accent’ has given it some success.

Apart from the domestic market, it is also using India as a hub for manufacture of small cars that it exports to over 70 countries, including Europe, Africa and Latin America. The company plans to export as much as 50% of the production from India and said it is working on a plan to get a rail connectivity to transport its cars from the factory to the Chennai port, to make the process more efficient and safe.

"RITES had done a feasibility study for this and if approved, it would be a tri-partite project including the railways, Chennai port and the Tamil Nadu government," the officials said.

Honda Civic

Easy on the eyes, easy to love. We miss the Civic’s effortless nature. “Our Civic just carried on stretching our smiles, with the same effortless ease

When you have a car as good as the Civic to evaluate over the span of eight months, you expect some of that sheen to fade. You expect a slow, but distinctly noticeable reduction in overall appeal, as the newness wears off and familiarity sets in. This, after all, is true of any long-term relationship. So we waited, and waited and waited. And then waited some more. But the Civic just carried on stretching our smiles with the same effortless ease.

Still, there were a couple of things about the Civic we would have had different, so let’s get them out of the way before we tell you why we think the Civic is one of the best cars available here.

The Civic’s low-slung look gives it a unique identity, that’s for sure. But it also means the car’s passenger cabin is lower than most others. This means lots of bending to get in and out, avoiding whacking your head on the low sill as you step into the rear seats, hearing odd creaks and groans from kneecaps and lower backs. We got these complaints mainly from elderly passengers. The Civic’s other weakness is also associated with the word low. The car’s low ground clearance, in conjunction with its long wheelbase, mean the Civic is particularly susceptible to scraping its underbelly when getting in and out of steep driveways, especially when fully loaded. But for the most part we gladly overcame, or drove around these irritants.

Smooth, well-built, effortless and capable of great bursts of speed — that’s the easy description of our Civic. We were looking for the right stuff and our 2006 Car of the Year had it in spades. For a start, there’s the eye-grabbing profile; a shape that can be described with a single sweep of a Japanese calligraphy artist’s brush, the low nose, the cabin-forward passenger area and the rear flow in a single arch. People often commented on the sharp-edged-but-just-right detailing, like the headlights, the manner in which the fenders of the car dropped away from the bonnet and that concave rear end. “Wow, it looks so futuristic”, they said. Easy on the eyes, easy to love. The one thing we weren’t gaga about was the wheels, the alloys looking too ordinary for the rest of the design. And then there’s Honda’s own unique brand of quality. The cars may not have that much sought-after, tough European build, but there’s something special about Honda’s precision fit; as if it was cut with a laser. Hondas may feel light in comparison to the Europeans, but the quality feel stayed with us as the weeks rolled on. The slick manner in which the door handles function, the friction-free steering, the precise automatic gearbox selector, the effortless seat adjustment, all augmented by that totally smooth and silent motor.

First Drive Porsche Cayenne GTS

If you thought the already hard-charging Cayenne was soft around the edges and not as scalpel-sharp as a Porsche should be, the new GTS is for you. A real driver’s SUV, sporting essence distilled to near-perfection.

The road twists, turns and loops like spaghetti. We wait. And then wait some more. And a little more. Still nothing, no sloppy SUV looseness, no indication of 2.2 tonnes being flung around these Portuguese roads, not even a hint. Porsche says the roads around Faro, in southern Portugal, are some of the best if sporty driving is what you are looking for. And that’s exactly what we’re getting here — heaps and heaps of corners, some bunched together, some spread out, some tight and turning in on themselves, with others that are longer and more open. Tarmac Nirvana, in short, and the nonchalant manner in which the GTS is handling these twisters is deeply impressive. Even my otherwise-silent passenger pipes up. “It’s just unreal how well this car is handling all that weight,” he says. More revs on the V8.

Any drive of a new car starts at a measured pace. You need to feel how the car responds to your input, it’s easier to pick off areas of strength or weakness one at a time, rather than all together, and getting to understand the overall balance is essential; vital if you want to wring the most out of any car. Porsche’s new Cayenne GTS SUV has been specifically tuned to deliver the purest driving experience, but this is now bordering on the ludicrous. The GTS feels as composed and as unruffled as something that’s light and low-slung, something it certainly isn’t. Yes, yes, we know you’ve read all about these new-fangled SUVs that drive as well as cars, but this is beyond that, some way beyond. And, believe me, we are already shuffling along at an express rate, the direct-injection V8 bellowing blue murder.

And it’s not just any V8. This new GTS has the most responsive, most powerful naturally-aspirated V8 ever screwed down and hooked up under the bonnet of a Cayenne. And with shorter overall gearing and additional power, this 405bhp powerhouse packs muscle like little else. Ok, the Turbo, with its 500bhp twin-turbocharged V8, produces much more power, but for instant access to this power, this version of the V8 is it. Still, 2.2 tonnes is 2.2 tonnes.

2009 Mercedes-Benz SL-class

Mercedes has released information about the 2009 SL in advance of its debut at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show. The big roadster will get visual changes similar to the recently announced 2009 SLK roadster and CLS four-door coupe.

The most noticeable changes happen up front. Gone are the twin round headlights, replaced by units that appear to be lifted from the CLS. The more-compact lights make room for a wider single-bar grille adorned by a large three-pointed star. That new grille along with the dual "power domes" on the hood recall the progenitor of the SL line - the 300SL Gullwing.

Moving down the side of the Merc we can see gill vents aft of the front fenders which replace larger openings on the last SL. Like the 2009 CLS, the SL gets new side-view mirrors that house arrow-shaped turn indicators. Changes to the rear are minimal and include a new diffuser and trapezoidal exhaust tips.

Honda: ‘We want a Prius’

HONDA IS promising an all-new hybrid car that will make petrol-electric technology more affordable. Arriving in 2009, at an estimated cost of Rs 12 lakh, the new model has been described by an insider as a family hatch and, like the Toyota Prius, will be a standalone model. Up until now Honda’s hybrid strategy has been to bolt on hybrid systems to normal production models.

The new hatch could share a platform with the production version of the CR-Z, the hybrid coupé unveiled at the recent Tokyo Motor Show.

“Hybrid is the most appropriate technology for small cars,” said Honda Europe President Shigera Tokagi. “Making a global small hybrid will make it more affordable than existing hybrids.”

A Honda source predicted that the new car will be “very practical”, implying some MPV features and the company hopes to sell 200,000 a year globally. By contrast Honda sold 200,000 hybrids from 1999 to the end of 2006.

Honda is also forging ahead with improved diesels, planning to make its oil-burners as clean as its petrols. A cleaner and more powerful version of the current 2.2 diesel will be launched in next year’s new Accord. Called i-DTEC, it will also be available with an auto ’box. The firm also plans to produce an even cleaner development which will meet stringent Euro 6 regulations which come into force in 2014.
