2.2 mhawk engine for Mahindra Scorpio Vlx

After all these days of wait and speculation, Mahindra finally launched a new Scorpio variant Vlx with the new 2.2-liter engine. Rumoured earlier to be named eagle, its now branded as mHawk.

This new 16-valve engine displaces 2179cc and churns out 120 bhp @ 4000 rpm and 290 Nm torque through 1800 - 2800 rpm. It is equipped with a Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT) to reduce the lag and ensure better delivery of power & torque right from the initial revs. As per Mahindra’s claim Scorpio mHawk can do 0-60 km/h in 5.7 seconds and can reach a top speed of 150 km/h.

The only visual changes that distinguish the Vlx are a translucent decal job and a really lame set of alloys. I personally prefer the hub caps over these. Vlx is priced at 9.57 lakhs (ex-showroom Bangalore) which is 1 lakh more than the top end 2.6 Slx’s 8.45 lakh price. But, Mahindra is making up for this steep increase in cost on the feature front.

Features are good …and mHawk’s got loads of them. The bigger upgrades on the whole feature list are Cruise control & ABS and others include Tyre-tronics, parking sensors, rain sensing wipers and light sensitive headlamps. But do all these upgrades justify the 1+ lakh increase in cost? even if they do, IMO Vlx is a bit on the expensive side. Disappointingly, airbags are not even optional and nothing has been done to correct its short-comings on the handling front.

What is surprising is this Scorpio 2.2 mHawk and the Safari 2.2 Dicor engines -their differences apart- have the same block level specs and both have been developed by the same company AVL.
